ASTERÓIDE AMEAÇA A TERRA EM 2036

Um asteróide pode aproximar-se perigosamente da Terra em 2036 e a Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU) pode assumir a responsabilidade de uma possível missão espacial para o desviar. Os Astrónomos estão a monitorizar um asteróide chamado Apophis, que tem uma probabilidade em 45 mil de atingir a Terra no dia 13 de Abril de 2036. O asteróide foi descoberto em Junho de 2004 e os estudos mostram que se colidisse com a Terra o seu impacto libertaria a mesma energia que 114.000 bombas atómicas semelhantes à de Hiroshima.

O ex-astronauta Russell Schweickart, tripulante da missão Apollo 15, pediu em audiência ao congresso americano fundos para ser enviada uma sonda ao asteróide, no intuito de depositar nele um rádio emissor, de modo que os astrónomos pudessem controlar sua posição em torno do Sol e da Terra até 2070.

Aurora Austral

Time-lapse footage of the Aurora Australis, or Southern Lights.
This is the Southern Hemisphere equivalent of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights.
Filmed during the Antarctic winter in the general vicinity of McMurdo Station and Scott Base, where the sun is below the horizon for 4 months of the year.
Most of the idividual clips here were taken over about a 10 minute period to give you an idea of how much they were moving in real time.

Astronomers Find First Earth-like Planet in Habitable Zone

Astronomers have discovered the most Earth-like planet outside our Solar System to date, an exoplanet with a radius only 50% larger than the Earth and capable of having liquid water. Using the ESO 3.6-m telescope, a team of Swiss, French and Portuguese scientists discovered a super-Earth about 5 times the mass of the Earth that orbits a red dwarf, already known to harbour a Neptune-mass planet. The astronomers have also strong evidence for the presence of a third planet with a mass about 8 Earth masses.

CARL SAGAN

Carl Edward Sagan (Nova Iorque, 9 de Novembro de 1934 - Seattle, 20 de Dezembro de 1996) foi um grande cientista e astrónomo Norte-americano. Dedicou-se à pesquisa e à divulgação da Astronomia, bem como ao estudo da Exobiologia (ramo da ciência que investiga a possibilidade da existência de vida fora do nosso planeta). Foi um excelente divulgador da Ciência, sendo considerado por muitos o maior divulgador de todos os tempos, um verdadeiro "showman" da Ciência.

Carl Sagan começou a sua carreira como assistente do prémio Nobel de medicina, H. J. Muller, nos anos 50. Conhecedor tanto de Astronomia como de Biologia, as suas contribuições para o estudo da ciência planetária são a base da pesquisa actual. "Cosmos", a série televisiva, ganhou vários prémios Emmy. O livro, foi a obra científica mais vendida de sempre. O seu romance, "Contacto", foi adaptado para o cinema pela Warner Bros. Teve um papel fundamental nas sondas Mariner, Viking e Voyager, pelas quais recebeu a medalha de Feito Científico Excepcional da NASA (duas vezes) e a medalha de Notável Seviço Público.
